Editing

I am an experienced editor of both magazine articles and books, and am confident working in many different fields. Whether I am dealing with general features or news stories, website copy or advertorials,
I can preserve the individual voice of the author and polish the finished article to the highest quality. I am available for all editing commissions, from copy for websites and publicity material to full-length books.

Magazine editing

Country Life

I was appointed Sub-editor of Country Life in October 2006, and after just six months was promoted to Deputy Chief Sub-editor. The position was an integral part of a small team producing one of the highest- quality and best-respected publications in the UK. In an extremely difficult marketplace, we recorded three year-on-year circulation increases during my time there. Its unique combination of top-class photography and writing on all aspects of the British countryside, property, travel, art, architecture, gardening and more makes it an essential part of the lives of thousands of people around the world.

Duties included:

  • Editing general and regular features, review pages and the news section
  • Editing the Letters page, turning it into one of the most popular pages in the magazine
  • Editing the weekly Spectator column, then written by Carla Carlisle, who was nominated as Writer
    of the Year at the National PPA Awards in 2012
  • Sub-editing the annual Travel Supplement, the biannual Schools Supplement and the triannual International Supplement
  • Editing advertorial pages for a range of clients, such as Bartlett Tree Experts, Canon and Savills
  • Working with some of the best writers in the UK, including Carla Carlisle, Kit Hesketh-Harvey, John Martin Robinson, Jeremy Musson, Jonathan Self, the late John Humphrey, Robin Hanbury-Tenison, Antony Woodward, Michael Billington and Gavin Stamp.

  • Fact-checking architectural terms, architects' names, place names, dates and so on
  • Editing text for consistency of style and accuracy
  • Advising on the inclusion of architectural periods and architects
